Contra Dance -
Contra Dance is a form of dance that is similar to square dance as a social dance performed to folk music. However, this dance is done in two long lines down the hall as partners face across from one another. These partners dance both together and with neighbors while moving down the line and to the other end. There are several sets of long lines depending on how many people show up to dance. Sounds complicated? Well, it is both user friendly and fun to learn. The feet are only asked to walk or stomp through the dance, and there is a "caller" who keeps the dance moving by indicating order and direction. No partner is necessary and dancers are encouraged to continue changing partners (even the ones they may have come with.) This makes a single person, like me, quite comfortable and mingling very natural. And people of all ages, including the teens, seem to enjoy the dance together making it a treasured family outing and great opportunity for wholesome socializing together. If you've never danced before, some groups offer a free walk thru with the basics at the beginning of each dance. New dancers mix right in with veterans and are encouraged so the dance can be a success. Everyone seems to be happy moving, which makes for a light and friendly atmosphere. Dress is casual and sometimes eclectically folksy... so go as you are. Sturdy street shoes or boots are recommended until you are ready for more professional styles or the barefooting with the pros.
