Jan 23, Mizero Dancers - Ambassadors for Reconciliation

The Mizero Troupe, a group of young people, mostly orphans from Rwanda, have an amazing story to tell through Dance and Song. I was lucky enough to see the traveling dance group as part of a Wednesday night service at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Charleston SC.

A man named Jean Paul Samputu formed Mizero out of the ravages of the traumatic genocide and rape of the women in Rwanda with the children survivors and homeless of various ages. He believed that only Dance can bring back a smile to the hearts of the children left behind. Theirs is a message of what, I believe, we discuss and hope for in our religious services about" forgiveness." Nelson Mandela described Not forgiving, "Like drinking the poison and waiting for the enemy to die." These children are doing more than turning away from the "poison"...remarkably and yet simply they are turning towards dance and healing self expression!

Their Joy is incredibly infectious . I was awestruck by the Sheer Beauty of both their smiles and the majestic quality of their movement. And true to the form of dance itself the troupe shares the rich cultural heritage using their traditional dances, gestures, and costumes. They danced and floated effortlessly with baskets on their heads and made every bit of music using their bodies singing and drumming.

And in this time of I pod and technology I sensed something important-

For a short while I was moved from my constant struggle with the anxiety of the week and reminded of the simplicity of REAL LIVING in harmony and the Grace of moving forward in love and hope. All hail the children of Rwanda and the Great Spirit that moves us all.

****************************
"The Mizero Children of Rwanda is a non-profit public charity based in Kigali, Rwanda with branches in Nyanza, Rwanda, the USA and in Canada.
Dec 30, Nutcracker Review

Judy Cobau, Modern Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer residing in Charleston, SC, writes this Review of Mark Morris' Nutcracker:

'Tis the season to see a Nutcracker ballet. Performances are taking place everywhere: My nephew in Toledo, Ohio danced the Mouse King. My grand-daughter in Lincoln, Nebraska will attend. Three companies are scheduled to perform in Charleston, South Carolina over the holiday. It has become, as the Charleston Ballet Theater claims, a "Holiday Tradition." To celebrate this time of year I watch "The Hard Nut," a totally different adaptation, choreographed by Mark Morris. Although the music is still Tchaikovsky and the libretto basically the same, gone is the traditional sugary, sweet children's version set in an ideal world.
What is it about "The Hard Nut" that draws me to it annually? I particularly like the irony in the party scene and the choreography of the Waltz of the Snowflakes. Being set in the world decorated with identical white plastic bulbs, a white plastic sofa, chrome drink table, an abstract black and white painting--all rather chintzy. This comic book world unfolds as the pop-character guests enter with presents they put under the tree, but when they leave they take the presents with them. They are garishly dressed in greens and reds. They dance the popular dances of the day including a licentious style bump. They fight, drink too much, pass out, make out, and are plainly obnoxious. After the party ends, huge rats battle a GI Joe's gang--nothing like the conventional mock battle scene of mice and toy soldiers.

Just as the party scene overturns our expectations of the traditional Nutcracker, so also the Waltz of the Snowflakes breaks new ground. In contrast to the former all female snowflakes,we see twenty-two men and women. They both wear the same costumes and perform identical movements. Two dancers enter on pointe, moving to the opposite wing where flying paper snow greets them. Four dance take their place tossing hands full of snow. Dancers continuously enter and exit, swirling across the stage with sweeping arm movements accented by the throwing of the snow. This exuberant dancing builds until the back stage is covered with snow and all the dancers are for the first time on the stage together. The pace grows faster with running, jumping, leaping, turning and tossing until for a moment they are gone. Four dancers on pointe enter with parallel, outstretched arms still dropping snow. The mood is now calm as all the dancers slowly enter and revolve on the spot only to stop one or two at a time as Drosselmeier passes on his way up stage. The curtain falls. No one else in the hundreds of Nutcracker productions has used this repeated confetti tossing. It is wonderful to witness. Because of Morris' genius, he has transformed a traditional Nutcracker performance into a thoroughly contemporary ballet suggesting a new direction for dance.
