Top Dance Music

Traditionally top dance music and the dances have the same name and stay that way...(like waltzes, the tango, and contra dance, and the well-known cha-cha-cha.) I like how Wikipedia says, "Often it is difficult to know whether the name of the music came first or the name of the dance." Either way, society grouped certain music styles into genres, which helped the dancer chose a music and tempo to match the kind of dance that they want to perform...For example, a ballad might be used for a slow moving dance and folk music for a contra dance.

Today's top dance music, however, seems more complex as technology exposes a dancer to a volume and variety of world music and ever evolving dance forms. From break dancing, to couple dancing, to sexy choreographed group routines, dance is also being promoted more than ever with the creation of top shows such as
"So You Think You Can Dance".

Here are some of my favs from my Playlist at www.Playlist.com(*I do purchase the music from I-tunes and encourage you to support the artists by buying the music that you like presented here.)

- One of the famous dance groups use the now top dance music "Put your Hands Where My Eyes Can See", by Busta Rhymes. This slow beating rap type hip-hop song was presented in a series of controlled movements by the group during season three. Dancer appeared from behind the stage, and made it feel like a slow motion dance club with the routines. This style of dance can be found going on around the country with similar dance music.

- Another popular form of top dance music involves interesting combinations of unexpected styles. "Pop Jazz" was also used in season three by the couple Sara Von Gillern And Jesus Solorio. The reactions to this combination were that it was an automatic stand out, and the styles that came from them were unique, and even "twisted". These dancers have also used pop jazz for other performances that incorporate a variety of styles, including ballet, modern and jazz into one style that can't be easily described.

- "Sweet Dreams" has long been included in popular dance music, and it has been adopted with multiple styles of dance. Sabra and Neil brought this dance to life with an extremely suggestive dance that fit in the jazz category somehow, but the dance brought the music to life. This song can be used for so many styles. Other jazz songs that have been made popular have been "Night of the Dancing Flame" by Roisin Murphy.

While some of these individual songs stand out as THE top dance songs, it is more of an inspiration to generate great and versatile dance routines. The best dances - and therefore the songs, should invite the dancers to dance, act, experience? so that it becomes more than simply a technical performance. Songs that inspire stories to come out of the performance.

When searching for the top dance songs, be gutsy and break out into some non-standard selections. Picking music that has been overused will not give your performance the full progressive edge. Use selections that are a little risky, with some edge. Create your own top dance music, and by adding your style to it, you might be surprised what happens.

Stay true to what you are trying to accomplish with your performance. Use the top songs for inspiration, but don't feel locked into those as your only selection. With some of the performances, the unique mix of styles created a NEW dance that wowed the audience. When you stay too safe, there is nothing to brand you as up and coming.

Pick a song or series of songs that emit the feel - whether its suggestively sexual, happy, dark, energetic, or anything else on the spectrum of dance performances. Top dance songs are created from being danced to, you could be the next trend setter!
